Clutch is Largely a Myth

In some sense, all major league baseball players are clutch performers. In order to reach their level of performance, they almost surely could not be more likely to fail when the pressure is on.

On the other hand, if by clutch, one means that somehow performance is magically amplified when needed, there is little or no evidence to support that supposition. Indeed, this would seem sensible. For why would a player execute sub-optimally on any occasion, if he could choose to do otherwise?
